Chantelle's Analysis of Setting

SECTION 4

The novel Pride and Prejudice takes place during the late 18th and early 19th century times. There are a variety of locations mentioned in the novel, but all reside in the country of England. Jane Austen wrote the novel between the years 1786 to 1813 and was finally published that same year. It is evident that she had written the story in the same time period she had been living in. Some may call this point of time during the Napoleonic Wars. During these times, many saw it was crucial for woman to marry a wealthy man in order to live a fulfilling life, and it is seen especially in the way Mrs. Bennet thrived for all her daughters to be happily married. This was a time where social status played a big role in how people were treated as well.

In the beginning of the novel, most of it took place at Longbourn London, where the Bennet family lived. Elizabeth would make constant trips also to visit her aunt and uncle which was said to be in London as well, on Gracechurch Street. Near the end of the novel, most of it took place in Derbyshire, Pemberley where Mr. Darcy resides. It is where he had proposed to Elizabeth, and had long walks with her.
