Most Memorable Moment Journal

Section 2

Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen is a story about society and the relationships of family. It focuses mainly on the Bennet's, specifically the two eldest daughters; Jane and Elizabeth and the man she loves, Mr. Darcy. As I was reading this book, I noticed not only did Austen portray romance and marriage in the novel, but she also included comedy as well. This was a good idea for Austen to do because it made the novel much more interesting to read.

In all honestly, I felt that there was much more than one memorable moment in this novel. I enjoyed many parts of this book, and I’m sure many of my friends did as well. The part I thought stood out the most for me was when Elizabeth had realized the truth about Mr. Darcy. This event took place when Mr. Darcy had proposed to Elizabeth and she had rejected him in an awfully rude way because he had ruined Jane’s relationship with Mr. Bingley. When Elizabeth had rejected him, Mr. Darcy left the room and did not come back. The next day when he saw her, he gave her a note and walked away. The note explained how he did not mean to ruin Jane’s relationship with Mr. Bingley, but felt it was right because he did not want to see her get hurt. The note also explained the entire truth about Wickham, a man Elizabeth had looked greatly upon. The later stated that Mr. Darcy did take care of him after his father’s death, but the reason for their fight was because Wickham had wanted to elope with his sister Georgina in the hopes of obtaining her fortune. When Elizabeth read this letter, she was absolutely stunned. She felt horrible after the way she treated Mr. Darcy and wanted to apologize.

The reason I find this moment memorable is because in the society we live in, many people are extremely quick to judge. We don’t take the time to confront one another and ask each other the real story. Many of us create assumptions which often end in some sort of fighting. If Elizabeth had taken the time to ask Mr. Darcy why he didn’t want Jane to be with Mr. Bingley or why he treated Wickham the way he did, Elizabeth would be much more understanding and sympathetic towards him. She would not have blamed him for anything, and she wouldn’t have acted the way she did when he proposed.

When I read this scene, I realized that Mr. Darcy truly is a great guy and not many people do recognize this. Although he has his moments when he can be completely arrogant, he will always be completely honest and he looks out for the people cares about. This is also a good part of the novel because this is when Elizabeth’s entire perspective of Mr. Darcy changes, and she realizes he is an amazing guy after all. We can all learn a lesson from this scene because as I stated earlier, we should never create assumptions. These assumptions often lead to hatred and we then fail to see who the person really is.
