Insightful and Constructive Comment

By: Ashley Jose
Sydney’s Contemporary Relevance
My favorite part out of all of Sydney’s work is her contemporary relevance; this is because I can completely agree to everything she has written. I felt she had done a great job connecting ideas and relating it into today’s society.   I also enjoyed reading her personal opinion towards the situation because I can relate exactly towards her feelings.  Although I enjoyed her writing piece, I think Sydney could have improved it more if she had added more detail or written some examples for her readers. Overall, she had concluded her article very well and made a good decision choosing this topic.

Chantelle’s Media
Out of all of Chantelle’s great work, what caught my attention the most was her media piece. I think Chantelle had done a great job in creating this because, the colors she chose, the font she used, and the picture she had chosen all compliment her media piece greatly.  I like this because the way she created it explains the entire novel of Pride and Prejudice extremely well.  Even though this is my favorite of Chantelle’s work, she could have related it more to her section of the book. In my opinion, I feel her piece relates more towards the entire novel itself, rather than her section of the book as she was assigned.  Having said that, Chantelle created this media piece in a neat and presentable manner and I think she did a great job on it.

Marina’s Most Memorable Journal
Marina’s most memorable moment journal had been extremely thorough which I was most pleased about. I liked how she had explained what happened throughout the scene very descriptively and clearly. It had been a very good choice for her to relate it to real life situations. I completely agree with Marina when she said, “if you are those shallow people that only go for looks, you will not have a happy relationship.” It relates to the novel very well because if Darcy had went for Elizabeth just because of her looks, he would not be in love with her and she would most likely get hurt in the end. In conclusion, Marina did a great job writing this journal, but I do think she should check her spelling mistakes and punctuation. Other than that, she had written this journal very well.

SECTION 4

Sydney's Responses to Section 4

  1.           After completing the novel, why do you think Jane Austen chose to give the novel the title “Pride and Prejudice?”

After completing the novel, I think the author Jane Austen chose to give the novel the title “Pride and Prejudice” because the words in the title are just two of the basic themes that happen in the novel. Pride was shown when Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth first met in teh beginning of the novel. Prejudice was also shown at the beginning when Elizabeth thought Mr. Darcy was just a guy with a cocky attitude and didn’t care about anything.
  1. 2.       When or what moment do you think Elizabeth finally realizes that her opinion of Mr. Darcy from the beginning was completely wrong?
<!--[if !supportLists]-->
I think Elizabeth finally realized her opinion of Mr. Darcy from the beginning was completely wrong when she went to go see him and she saw him with a different girl. Elizabeth later found out that the girl Darcy was talking to was just his sister. She realized that she also paid for the wedding.

Chantelle's Section 3 Response

2) Lydia and Wickham plan to run away and elope. Does this show us who Wickham really is?
Yes, this shows us an idea of what kind of man Wickham really is because he plans to run away, with a fifteen year old girl without the knowledge of anybody, not even her own family members. This shows us that Wickham is irresponsible and does not care about Lydia’s family enough to let them know. He also hides his past experiences with Mr. Darcy’s sister to everyone which makes him untrustworthy and not mature enough to take responsible for his past mistakes. On the outside, Wickham appears to be a handsome put together man, but on the inside, his true character seems to be the complete opposite.

4) As Georgina Darcy is introduced into the novel, why do you think she's a threat to Jane Bennett?

As Georgina Darcy is introduced into the novel, I think she is seen as a threat to Jane Bennet because she is already in close relation to Mr. Bingley through her brother Mr. Darcy. She comes from a wealthy family and is in the same class status as Mr. Bingley. Bingley’s sisters already admire her more than Jane, and would want her to be his wife instead.

Sydney's Character Analysis

Section 3

Elizabeth- Elizabeth Bennett is introduced as the second daughter of the Bennett family. Her family members usually recognize her as Lizzy. Elizabeth would have to be the most intelligent, confident and classy out of her other sisters. This character meets a young man named Darcy whom she loves basically throughout the whole book. Yet, she doesn’t tell him how she feels. Darcy doesn’t necessarily like her in the beginning but in the end he falls head over heels for her. Elizabeth has a unique personality and the way she was involved in Pride and Prejudice made me read even more.

“You never will be able to make both of them good for anything. Take your choice, but you must be satisfied with only one. There is but such a quantity of merit between them; just enough to make one good sort of man; and of late it has been shifting about pretty much. For my part, I am inclined to believe it all Mr. Darcy's, but you shall do as you choose.''

``You are quite right. To have his errors made public might ruin him for ever. He is now perhaps sorry for what he has done, and anxious to re-establish a character. We must not make him desperate.''

``When I said that he improved on acquaintance, I did not mean that either his mind or manners were in a state of improvement, but that from knowing him better, his disposition was better understood.''

Lydia – Lydia Bennett is one of the younger sisters of the Bennett family. She has a confident and outgoing personality. Lydia falls for one man who goes by the name of Mr. Wickham. Lydia decides to elope with this guy and not have the family involved. The family definitely does not approve of him. Lydia Bennett likes to do things her way and I guess that’s what makes her character interesting

``I am sure I shall break mine,''.

``Good Heaven! What is to become of us! What are we to do!'' would they often exclaim in the bitterness of woe. ``How can you be smiling so, Lizzy?”

“Though I am not her particular friend. I have just as much right to be asked as she has”

Wickham- Mr. Wickham belongs to a wealthy family. Wickham falls for Elizabeth at first but then moves onto her sister Lydia. Wickham does not have great history with Mr. Darcy. Both of them continue to hold grudges against each other. That shows how much they both have gone through since none of them are willing to talk to one another. Wickham has an interesting twist to his personality. I find it so mysterious

``You, who so well know my feelings towards Mr. Darcy, will readily comprehend how sincerely I must rejoice that he is wise enough to assume even the appearance of what is right. His pride, in that direction, may be of service, if not to himself, to many others, for it must deter him from such foul misconduct as I have suffered by

“But you blame me for having spoken so warmly of Wickham”

``How unfortunate that you should have used such very strong expressions in speaking of Wickham to Mr. Darcy, for now they do appear wholly undeserved.''

Writing in Role

Dear Diary

I can’t believe what my sister is doing. Running away and planning to get married with Wickham? That’s really funny. I know Wickham is wealthy and all that but he’s not that great. Plus, I don’t want to ruin our family’s reputation. Darcy even told me that he had a really bad past with him and it doesn’t sound so great. He even left me for my sister. Just watch, one day he’ll eventually leave my sister like he did to me. My sister needs a man who will be there for her and won’t ditch. I really want the best for my sister. I love her and I think she deserves better. Wickham will probably end up hurting her feelings. I hope she doesn’t fall too hard for him too fast.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Bennett

Sydney's Analysis of Style and Structure

Section 3
Pride and Prejudice includes many literary devices, themes and different symbols. I believe this novel’s main theme is love. Love is the universal theme happening throughout the book. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy fall in love with each other as well as her other sisters, Jane and Lydia. Jane Austen also includes the theme of reputation. In the novel, Elizabeth’s sister Lydia runs off with Wickham who plan to run away and get married. If they decide to elope, both Wickham and the Bennett’s family reputation will be ruined. The Bennett’s family are a middle class family while the Wickham family is higher than them. Prejudice is also a major theme considering that Elizabeth had some comments about Mr. Darcy at the beginning of the novel.

Jane Austen uses foreshadowing and also symbolism. She uses symbolism at the very beginning of the novel when she starts off by saying “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife”. Austen gives us a little hint of what was to expect in the novel. Jane also uses symbolism when she relates Mr. Darcy’s estate as something artificial.

The author Jane Austen did a great job of involving many themes, literary devices or symbols in the book and letting us relate it to  ourselves, objects or even issues today in our society.

Sydney's Contemporary Relevance

Section 3
In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen incorporates many themes that we can easily relate to our society. Just by looking at the title, you can tell what the whole issue of this book can be. Prejudice is used many times like when Elizabeth thinks Mr. Darcy is the guy that has too much pride and doesn’t care about anything. Turns out, Darcy was this sweet guy who knew how to treat her right.

Today in our society, people tend to judge others without even realizing it. It’s just the way our society is today. Making judgements/ being prejudice doesn’t help build a relationship very well. Society has made a great impact on us. Media has influenced us to listen/ see what they do or say. For instance, many artists create songs with prejudice being involved. In my opinion, I really don’t like how society can easily change who we are. We’re turning out to be the people we’re not. Plus we’re not respecting God’s creation.

Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy looked past their first impressions of each other and got to know each other. Even though these two are just characters from a novel, I believe Jane Austen made the story line like that so we can use it in our daily lives and realize that there’s more to a person that from what you hear. People in our world today need to stop and think of each other and how we are all the same because we are made by God.
